Racing wheels are the best wheels available, but there are many different types depending on the type of racing done. For drag racing the wheels are made to accept huge tires in the back, up to 15 inches wide with a 36 inch diameter. However in the front the wheels are less than 4 inches wide and about 20 inches in diameter.
Drag racing wheels are designed to handle huge amounts of torque associated with fast acceleration and braking but won’t corner well at all. For road racing there are completely different wheels from track racing as well as different tires. One thing most of these wheels do have in common is the ability to dissipate heat better than standard wheels. This is due to the materials used, typically magnesium, and the design of the spokes.
Magnesium is used in racing wheels not because it is lighter than steel, but because it is much stronger and dissipates heat much better than steel and aluminum. High speed driving and braking creates extreme amounts of heat that can quickly warp other wheels making them very dangerous to race on. A light wheel also decreases the un-sprung weight which improves the handling and performance of the vehicle.
