Trucks
are made to take the punishment their owners can dish out. They are
the work horses of our transportation society and are likewise built
to last. Almost every truck come standard with high quality, durable
steel wheels that are made to last the lifetime of the truck if they
are cared for, but they are the same steel truck wheels that are found
on every other truck. There are very few interesting designs on OEM
wheels which have caused the custom truck wheels market to boom.
Custom truck wheels are purchased to increase the performance
of the truck, the toughness of the wheel or just for looks. There
are three basic types of wheels and they are classified by the materials
that are used and how they are made. The most common and durable wheels,
even aftermarket wheels, are stamped steel wheels. Steel is really
strong and comparatively cheap which makes it so popular. It is also
easy to manufacture into strong rims with interesting designs. These
are the most durable and long lasting wheels that can be purchase
and with a little but of care they can last a lifetime. Rust is their
biggest issue and that can be combated with regular cleaning and by
sealing the wheel with a protective sealant.
Just as strong as steel but a little lighter and lot
more expensive are forged alloy wheels. They are created under extreme
pressure and heat which makes them incredibly dense and strong. The
process is difficult and time consuming which drives up the price
of these custom truck wheels. They are made from an alloy of aluminum
and magnesium, sometimes steel as well. This makes them lighter than
a steel wheel but with comparable strength and durability. Forged
wheels are some of the most versatile wheels on the market, simultaneously
used on race cars and off-road trucks.
For the more cost conscious truck owner that still wants
a set of great looking wheels there are cast aluminum alloy wheels.
These are often made with the same alloys that forged wheels are made
from, but instead of extreme heat and pressure they are merely poured
into a cast. This makes the wheels malleable and flexible which can
make a rough ride smoother, but they are also prone to being off balance.
As the wheel hardens on its own it can have spots of differing density
which can cause wheel wobble and is very dangerous at high speeds.
This is why cast wheels are rarely used on sports cars.
The great thing about cast wheels is they look great
and they are very affordable, only a little bit more expensive than
a set of good steel wheels. They are shiny and rust resistant, but
tend to corrode faster if taken off road regularly. There are many
different designs and are some of the easiest custom truck wheels
to build. Prices can vary because of size, variety and brand.
Be sure to get the bolt pattern correct as well as the
pitch circle diameter and center spigot diameter before purchasing
any new wheels.
