Bavarian
Motor Works (BMW) has a well deserved reputation for building some
of the finest automobiles on the road. Originally established as an
airplane engine manufacturer shortly before World War I, they began
making motorcycles and automobiles in the 1920’s. However, after
World War II the company lay in ruins and it wasn’t until the
late 1950’s / early 1960’s that it would begin to rebound.
Today, BMW is one of the world’s most famous car
manufacturers, and its vehicles are highly prized by car enthusiasts.
And as any enthusiast will tell you, a BMW car deserves a proper set
of BMW wheels. Wheels might seem like an arbitrary thing, but they
can have an impact on the overall ride and handling abilities of the
vehicle.
The vast majority of BMW wheels are made from a metal
alloy. They are designed to be strong, yet lightweight, ensuring the
best combination of agility and efficiency. Because they’re
alloy, they also tend to be somewhat expensive; however, owning a
BMW means that nearly everything you purchase for the vehicle will
be more expensive than your average car.
The size of the wheel is important to both the overall
ride of the vehicle, as well as its overall appearance. A wider wheel
puts more tire rubber on the asphalt, which can dramatically improve
the grip when performing high speed maneuvers. In order to produce
the optimal handling situation, using tires with a shorter sidewall
(low profile) is usually recommended.
That being said, the use of low profile tires will mean
that you can increase the overall diameter of the wheel itself, as
there is less tire to occupy space within the wheel well of the vehicle.
BMW wheels come in several sizes, ranging from 16-21 inches in diameter.
Depending on your particular model of car, you might be somewhat limited
in what size wheels you can realistically use. While a 21 inch wheel
looks cool, it would take an extremely low profile tire in order to
allow these wheels on a smaller 3-series, if they could be used at
all. Conversely, a 16 inch wheel might look a bit silly on a much
larger 7-series.
Most BMW wheels come in a star-spoke design; however,
there are some variations on this theme. The most basic star-spoke
design is essentially 5 spokes radiating out from the central hub
to the outside of the wheel. Double spoke designs take this a step
further by maintaining the same star formation, but with two spokes
for each of the five sections. Radial spoke wheels are made with 15-16
spokes all radiating out from the hub at even intervals.
There are a variety of companies that make aftermarket
BMW wheels. While these wheels are rarely officially sanctioned by
BMW, they are often made to quality standards that rival those made
by BMW. Investigating aftermarket wheels can provide numerous design
options that aren’t available through OEM (Original Equipment
Manufacturer) part dealers. These aftermarket versions can often be
found for far less money than those sold through a BMW dealership.
