There are two types of aluminum truck wheels, those that are cast and those that are forged. Forged aluminum is one of the best materials for a wheel. They are made under high pressure making a very strong and dense wheel that is still remarkably light and they are made to very high manufacturing standards. There really is no better choice than a forged wheel.
Cast aluminum truck wheels are less expensive and easier to produce. They are not made under high pressure so the wheel is more porous which may cause premature corrosion, but this can be avoided by keeping them clean. Since the material is less dense more intricate designs can be made into the spokes of the wheel but strength is lost.
Aluminum truck wheels are often alloyed with other metals for less weight and increased strength and heat dissipation. Magnesium is one of the more popular materials but many metals and compounds, including steel, can be combined for certain characteristics. Magnesium is stronger and lighter than aluminum, and there is less of it so it can become very expensive.
